Ja n 20 01 Particle Identification by Multifractal Parameters in γ - Astronomy with the HEGRA - Čerenkov - Telescopes HEGRA Collaboration

چکیده
Čerenkov images of air showers can also be classified using multifractal and wavelet parameters, as compared to the conventional Hillas image parameters. This new technique was applied to the images recorded by the cameras of the stereoscopic imaging air Čerenkov-telescopes operated by the HEGRA collaboration. With respect to the identification of particles, the performance of multifractal and wavelet parameters was examined using a data sample from the observation of the active galaxy Mkn 501 that showed a high γ-ray flux. The multifractal parameters were also combined with the Hillas parameters using a neural network approach in order to further improve the γ/hadron-separation.

Monte Carlo studies on the sensitivity of the HEGRA imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescope system in observations of extended γ-ray sources
In this paper, we present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of atmospheric showers induced by diffuse γ-rays as detected by the high-energy gamma-ray astronomy (HEGRA) system of five imaging atmospheric Čerenkov telescopes (IACTs). We have investigated the sensitivity of observations on extended γ-ray emission over the entire field of view of the instrument. We discuss a technique to searc...
متن کاملA new template background estimate for source searching in TeV γ-ray astronomy
A new method is described that permits quickly and easily, a 2-dimensional search for TeV γ-ray sources over large fields of view (∼ 6◦) with instruments utilising the imaging atmospheric Čerenkov technique. It employs as a background estimate, events normally rejected according to a cosmic-ray background rejection criterion based on image shape, but with reconstructed directions overlapping th...

The TeV spectrum of Mkn 501 as measured during the high state in 1997 by the HEGRA stereoscopic system of imaging aiř Cerenkov telescopes Abstract The BL Lac object Mkn 501 has shown very high emission in TeV γ-rays from March to October, 1997. During this period the source was continuously monitored with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 4 imaging aiř Cerenkov telescopes for a total exposure ti...
متن کاملCharacteristics of the Multi-Telescope Coincidence Trigger of the HEGRA IACT System
The HEGRA–collaboration is operating a system of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to search for sources of TeV–γ–rays. Air showers are observed in stereoscopic mode with several telescopes simultaneously. To trigger the telescope system a versatile two–level trigger scheme has been implemented, which allows a significant reduction of the energy threshold with respect to single telescope...

Blazars with redshifts z ≤ 0.1 are likely candidates for detection at energies in the range 300 GeV – 50 TeV withČerenkov telescopes and scintillator arrays. We present γ-ray flux predictions for a sample of 15 nearby flat-spectrum radio sources fitting the proton blazar model of Mannheim (1993a) to their observed broad-band spectral energy distributions. At high energies, we use fluxes or flux...
